Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the pressure pain threshold (PPT) and posture of neck and shoulder when using a smartphone.

Methods Thirty four healthy volunteers were recruited. Each participant sat on a chair in two different conditions; normal sitting without using a phone, and conducting twohanded watching the smartphone while sitting. To quantitatively assess the cervical and scapular angle of subjects, the angle was measured using the goniometer.
The PPT of subjects was measured using the digital algometer pressure.

Results The cervical flexion, anterior tilting and internal rotation of scapular angle were significantly greater when sitting with using a smartphone compared to that of the sitting without using a smartphone (p<0.05). The PPT of suboccipital, supraspinal and trapezius muscles were significantly lesser when sitting with using a smartphone compared to that of sitting without using a smartphone (p<0.05).

Conclusion These results suggest that habitually using a smartphone in sitting position could be a risk factor for neck and shoulder musculoskeletal problems.
